Connecting Martial Artists with Human Performance Experts to Empower Complete Combat Athletes

Dr. Rob Buhmann

Dr. Rob Buhmann joined the University of the Sunshine Coast as a lecturer in their School of Health and Sport Sciences following completion of his doctorate at the Queensland University of Technology in 2019.

He has experience teaching in the areas of Motor Control and Learning, as well as Anatomy, Functional Anatomy and Resistance Training. Prior to completing his PhD, Rob also worked as a strength and conditioning coach in Australian professional soccer.

Rob's PhD research investigated the neuromuscular function of the Hamstring muscle group following Hamstring strain injury. He maintains an affiliation with the QUT Hamstring strain injury research group, and has additional research interests in optimising rehabilitation for injury and neuromuscular adaptations to different modes of exercise.

Rob specialist areas of knowledge include sports injury rehabilitation, neurophysiological adaptations to injury and exercise, neurophysiology research methods, the control of human movement and resistance training.

Aaron Blackie

Aaron Blackie is a lifelong martial artist with black belts in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Not only with credentials in those sports on national and oceanic levels, Aaron is an active featherweight mixed martial artist (8 wins and 2 losses) and currently holds the Aftershock Featherweight Championship belt.

Aaron has a Bachelor of Health Science and experience working for Education Queensland planning, designing and implementing curriculum for Physical Education and Humanities students. 

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Health and Education, Black Belt in BJJ + Judo & Professional MMA athlete

Tyler Brooks

Tyler completed a Bachelor of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences and a Masters of Dietetics after moving away from a long career in the fitness industry where he owned and operated several gyms.

Tyler gained his experience in sports nutrition over the years, interning for several years at the Brisbane Broncos rugby league club, as well as currently working as a dietitian for the Qld Women’s Rugby 7’s team. 

He has a strong passion for nutrition and improving the performance of my clients and the athletes that he works with. Your goals might take the form of excelling in your chosen sport, boosting productivity, being more active at home, crushing it in the gym, or unlocking a personal weight loss or muscle gain milestone. Performance is different for everyone, but everyone can strive to perform at their best. He wants to help you do that.  

He continues to follow his passion for performance nutrition and outside of work, and love staying up to date on all things nutrition. He is also a competitive powerlifter and enjoy experimenting and optimising with his own diet for competition.

Mitchell Robinson

Exercise Scientist turned Physiotherapist Mitchell Robinson has over 5 years industry experience assisting elite level combat athletes recover faster and prevent injuries in high intensity environments.

He began martial arts at the age of 12 studying Judo where he competed in numerous competitions before eventually transitioning into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Mitchell prides himself on his evidence based approach setting aside an hour each day to study the latest research articles on pain management. This allows him to cut through the gimmicks and fads that flood his industry and instead provide his clients with effective, tried and tested injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies.

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Exercise Science, Bachelor of Physiotherapy & Graduate Diploma of Theology

Marcel Noronha

Marcel completed his master of Applied Psychology specialising in Sport and Exercise at The University of Queensland.

He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, current treasurer of the Queensland College of Sport and Exercise Psychology, and is registered and endorsed as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Marcel’s focus and expertise are in promoting high levels of consistent peak performance. He works with an array of athletes, from developmental to elite levels, and for various sporting organisations and academies, including mostly recently Queensland Academy of Sport, Swimming Australia, and the Brisbane Broncos.

Marcel’s dream to help shape world champions has been the motivation behind his success in sport psychology to date.

A sportsman from a young age, excelling in rugby league and boxing, Marcel’s desire to work with the best and break world records has been born through experience and a love of competitive sport.

Daniel Higgins

Dan Higgins is widely regarded as Australia’s most experienced MMA Coach with his students winning over 30 National and International championship titles competing in the UFC, ONE Championship, Legends, King of the Cage and Rizin.

As a pioneer in the sport himself he trained and competed in Australia, Japan and in the US. Dan is a Second Degree BJJ Black Belt with 8 affiliated BJJ and MMA gyms currently operating under his lineage.

After fighting a student of the world renowned Greg Jackson he was invited to train with him in New Mexico beginning a relationship that would lead to him becoming Australia’s only Black Belt under Greg’s syllabus.

Throughout his combat career Dan’s working career has also followed a combat related path working as the head bodyguard for Steve Irwin and now as the restraint and firearm instructor for Queensland Corrections.

To this day he continues developing his craft through daily training with his students at The Garage Grappling.
